AMSC is seeking a Senior Network Planning & Application Engineer to support Business Development, Sales and Engineering of AMSC Products and Solutions. The ideal candidate for this tole will be an industry advocate for AMSC technologies and solutions.
- Performs power systems analyses pertaining to transmission and distribution system expansion, voltage stability, reliability and power quality and derives technical solution options to meet customers’ requirements.
- Performs detailed analysis of industrial power quality problems and designs/recommends appropriate solutions.
- Uses network analysis software to perform detailed load flow, transient stability, electromagnetic transient studies in assessing system requirements and appropriate solution options (using either current or innovative new technologies).
- Develops, maintains and provides support for software models for all products.
- Performs or supports insulation coordination, arc flash and transient overvoltage studies.
- Actively participates in the existing product development and new product market needs analysis. Undertakes detailed application and design studies for AMSC’s products including FACTS systems, power electronic converters, energy storage solutions, fault current limiters and high capacity superconductor cable systems.
- Actively works to build relationships with utility planners and engineers, and consultants in the industry.
- Assists in development of competitive proposals that improves transmission and distribution system capacity while reducing transmission system costs. Proposals need to include technical as well as commercial analysis.
- Performs appropriate economic evaluations of transmission and distribution system expansion plans to accompany technical evaluations of recommended alternatives.
- Maintains a thorough knowledge of the current developments in the overall energy sector, particularly in the generation and transmission areas, in regards to legislative trends and requirements and how they can affect AMSC’s business goals.
- Prepares and delivers technical papers and presentations for trade shows and technical conferences.

Education – Experience:
- BS in Electrical Engineering with 5+ years of experience in the power sector (emphasis in power systems analysis, specifications, design and/or operation). Prior power utility, transmission and distribution planning experience preferred.
- Theoretical background on power systems analysis, specifically load flow, transient stability, harmonic analysis and electromagnetic transients.

- Demonstrated knowledge of network analysis software to perform load flow, stability, reliability, and power quality analysis using a major network analysis software such as Siemens PSS®E or GE PSLF. Summary – Job Responsibilities – Activities:
The Power Supply Mechanical Design Supervisor will perform mechanical design and supervise a team of mechanical designers for high power rectifiers and power supply products.
The supervisor will lead and guide the team to mechanically design power supply products on time and within budget, while following the customer specifications, industry standards and direction from the electrical and project engineers.The supervisor will also have direct design responsibilities using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD software programs (and Vault) to design the mechanical envelope and system layouts for rectifiers and power supplies.
Functions:
- Will need leading-edge knowledge of all mechanical design aspects of high-power Industrial Power Supplies and rectifier topologies in applications from 5kAdc to 100kAdc, including enclosures, rectifier power section, controls section, plumbing section, AC and DC bus bars and supports.
- Ability to effectively lead a team of mechanical designers in support of company objectives, including but not limited to budget hours, budget material costs, and schedules.
- Responsible for timely and accurate reporting of project status into the MRP system and to the engineering manager.
- Use Autodesk Inventor 3D (and 2D) programs to create customer and manufacturing documentation, including bills of materials, part and component models, detail drawings, assembly drawings, schematics, flow diagrams, piping assemblies, outline drawings and installation drawings.
- Work with cross-functional teams towards standardization of the power converter in order to increase quality/price ratio and reduce delivery time (lowest total cost designs).
- Create design guides and work instructions for the designers and for the shop when appropriate.
- Makes revisions, changes, and updates to existing documentation and 3D models while following Autodesk Vault and other document control processes.
- Troubleshoots and solves production floor issues regarding mechanical design.
- Interfaces with customers and vendors regarding assigned projects when needed.
- Able to interpret assembly and fab drawings and the requirements. Ensure internal or supplier capabilities are integrated in these requirements.
- Proactively engage with SME (subject matter experts) within Neeltran, but also with outside 3rd parties (consultants, key customer resources, etc.), as needed in support of above initiatives.
- Able to work directly with customers engineering group to improve designs and enhance processes.

- Fasten, align, and mount parts, components, relays, using hand and power tools. Route and terminate cables.
- Attach hardware using nuts, bolts, rivets, screws, or other methods. Cut, bend, grind, de-burr, and mount bus bar.
- Examine parts/ components that are installed to verify they are free from damage and defects. Notify supervisor if found.
- Operate basic hand tools, saws, punches, grinders, drills.
- Clean equipment, wipe clean, vacuum, or blow out metal chips and dirt. Perform work duties as assigned.
- Clean up shop area of tools and work at the end of each shift.

- Cut, bend, grind, trim, notch, punch, de-burr, clean, and weld sheet steel and structural steel using appropriate machines and hand tools.
- Plan, lay-out, fabricate, assemble, install, and repair sheet metal parts, products and equipment, utilizing knowledge of working characteristics of metallic and non-metallic materials, machining and lay-out techniques, using hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment.
- Select gauge and type of sheet metal such as galvanized, stainless, or other in accordance with requirements.
- Layout and mark dimensions and reference lines on materials, using scribers, dividers, squares, and rulers, applying knowledge of shop mathematics and lay-out techniques to develop and trace patterns.
- Sets up and operate fabricating machines such as shears, brakes, and presses to cut and bend materials.
- Trim, file, grind, buff, and smooth surfaces using hand tools and portable power tools.
